Replanting Unnecessary with Healthy N-Hibit™ Cotton

Steve Posey, who grows roughly 4,500 acres of cotton near Towne Creek, Alabama, was one of the few farmers in the area who didn’t have to replant a significant part of their cotton crop last season. Posey feels the reason is that he used N-Hibit as a seed treatment while the growers with replanting problems didn’t.

Practically every grower in this area had to replant at least some of their cotton in the spring of 2005. We didn’t, and the only difference I know was that we applied N-Hibit to our 4,500 acres. In addition to replanting less than one-percent of our crop, our cotton last year was just healthier overall. It grew off better, the fields and stands were more uniform, and I believe N-Hibit played a role in that.

Most growers in this area have high reniform nematode infestations that can really give us fits. And most years, the nematode problems are pretty significant. But in 2005, we didn’t notice the stunted cotton nematodes usually cause. Also, every soil sample we took last fall showed a decrease in nematode populations. And in some of the more heavily infested fields, the counts were remarkably lower. I’ve seen enough that I’m going to use the seed treatment on every acre again in 2006 because I just can’t afford to risk leaving it off, especially if it can help keep us from replanting.
